"One of the most pleasing and rational forms of entertainment is in those gatherings at which selections from literature are recited, dialogs and tableaux presented. They not only afford enjoyable entertainment, but are instructive and educative as well, inculcating and developing sound patriotism, and teaching in the most pleasant way the great moral lessons of life." |
| So begins the introduction to The Ideal Orator, A Modern Book of Elocution Readings Recitations Dialogues and Plays, written in 1904. This book, on loan from Don and Mary Kent of Hurley, was written when Teddy Roosevelt was President, women did not have the vote, and Enrico Caruso was playing the Met. You are cordially invited to join Catherine Cattabiani and Rena Blumenthal as they share some of these “modern” selections for a most “pleasing and rational” evening of entertainment. |
