Anton Chekhov (1860-1904)
Major Russian short story writer and playwright. Many of Chekhov's short stories are considered the apotheosis of the form while his playwriting career—though brief—has had a great impact on dramatic literature and performance. From Chekhov, many playwrights have learned how to use mood, apparent trivialities and inaction to highlight the internal psychology of characters. |
In the first comedy of By Chekhov, A Reluctant Tragic Hero, our hero spends the summer in the country, but is driven to the brink of distraction by various demands to run errands in the city and bring back lots of odd items to the country with him.
The second, The Bear, pits an irritable creditor against an eternally-mourning young widow, culminating in pistols and romance. |
The final piece, On The Harmfulness of Tobacco, starts as a lecture on the perils of smoking, then disintegrates into a bitter complaint by a
henpecked husband. |
