About Actors & Writers and Odd Shorts
Actors & Writers inaugurated its Shorts Festival in 1994, with a two-evening program called Brand New Shorts. The following
year, we produced More New Shorts, followed by Again With the New Shorts, Who You Callin’ Short, Night of the Living Shorts, Y2Shorts, Still Short After All These Years, Unscented Shorts, Extra Virgin Shorts, Shorts X, Shorts Happen, Esprit de Shorts, Shorts on a Plane, and The Skin of Our Shorts. To date, we’ve produced nearly 250 short plays by company writers and guests. Some have gone on to productions in venues ranging from the Actors Theatre of Louisville to Army bases in Hong Kong and Singapore; several have been made into films. It’s been a longstanding dream to gather and publish a group of our favorites. The plays in Odd Shorts range from outrageous comedy to intense drama, with pit stops at many unusual places between. They are populated by friends and lovers, ventriloquists’ dummies, lovestruck dogs, articulate luggage, and politicians beyond the verge of a nervous breakdown. All were born on the minuscule stage of the turn-of-the-century Odd Fellows Hall in Olivebridge, New York, that Actors & Writers calls home. We hope you’ll enjoy them as much as our audiences have.

David Smilow
HIT THE BUTTONS
Oddly Enough
|
David Smilow is--conveniently enough--an actor and a writer, whose stage roles have included a deer, a dog, a snake, a monkey, a bird, a suitcase, a house, and another dog, though as a playwright he has never written a single word for any of the above. Perhaps this is because he thinks like a human and acts like an animal. Or a suitcase. In any event, being an Actors & Writers member has been one of the joys of his upstate life and he is delighted to have Hit the Buttons included in this anthology.
