Though Samuel Beckett is known for his theatrical works, Waiting for Godot, Krapps Last Tape, etc., it is in his prose where we think you might find his most powerful writing. Beckett wrote a great deal of his material originally in French and then he translated it himself into English. He is one of the great stylists of the last century. His training, turn of mind and background was that of a literary scholar who was widely read in the European literary tradition. (He also new a lot of Gilbert and Sullivan's work by heart.) He was fluent in French, but could also read in Italian, Spanish and German. His first literary forays showed off his erudition; one of his very first published works was a scholarly essay on Marcel Proust. Over time his writing became more spare, more focused, and much richer in his attempt, oddly enough, to stop saying anything. On November 18 we will present an evening highlighting selections of his prose and poetry in chronological order,
