Will Nixon's poem My Late Mother As A Ruffed Grouse was the Second Place Winner in the MMSC's 2004 Vanguard Voices of the Hudson Valley Poetry Contest and was featured in our December '04 reading New York Writing. We have been in love with Will and his work ever since.

The title for this evening's program comes from Will's book by the same name, The Fish Are Laughing, Winner of the Pavement Saw Press Chapbook Award 2000-01. Don Wildy, Christine Crawfis and RoseMarie Navarra will be reading from "The Fish Are Laughing" and Will's second chapbook "When I Had It Made," as well as several of his essays and poems (both published and unpublished) and, of course, the poem which won him the Second Place prize.

" A painstaking yet whimsical record of personal landscapes that border rural environs threatened by our human intentions, The Fish Are Laughing doesn’t “pretend to paint the sacred,' though offering a hopeful vision in the midst of “wav[ing] in the turkey vultures to polish off the remains.'” —Pauline Uchmanowicz, reviewing The Fish Are Laughing, Chronogram

Will Nixon has published two chapbooks, When I Had It Made (Pudding House Press) and The Fish Are Laughing (Pavement Saw Press). Locally, his poems have appeared in Chronogram, The Country & Abroad, Prima Materia, and Hunger. His personal essays about the Catskills are at www.mycabinfever.com. He lives in Woodstock, NY. Although he has chosen to stay in the audience for this particular evening, The author will definitely be present and delighted to sign any of his books.

This performance takes place in one of MMSC's two new venues, The Cheese
Plate, and the admission charge includes a wonderful opportunity for some
delicious cheese tasting. In honor of our new venue at The Cheese Plate,
we will be reading Will’s poem entitled "Saying Cheese." The Cheese Plate is
a lovely little shop in the Water Street Market on Main Street in New Paltz. Kat Alexander sells cheeses from Europe and Ireland, as well as local favorites like the creamy semi-soft Ouray from Sprout Creek Farm in the Town of LaGrange. In addition, she carries a line of gourmet chocolates and features an old-fashioned ice cream parlor. We can’t wait!

Seating is very limited in this intimate setting so don't wait - reserve your seat now.
