With Paul Coleman as Samuel Gentle
Former minister Samuel Gentle has heard God's call, but can't understand God's mysteries. A tragic bus accident and the birth of his daughter, Ariel, with a rare medical condition have led Samuel on a restless spiritual journey, struggling to comprehend his anger and reclaim his faith. He wants to believe that "grace enters the soul through a wound." As Ariel grows into a child of transcendent inner beauty and strength, Samuel discovers what is most holy.
Sometimes poignant, sometimes comic, An Almost Holy Picture is an evocative telling of one man's quest for spiritual comfort in the face of uncompromising darkness.
Heather McDonald has garnered several awards for An Almost Holy Picture, which premiered at La Jolla Playhouse in 1995 and was named by the Los Angeles Times as the Best New Play of the Year. McDonald received the National Arts Club's prestigious Kesselring Award for Best New American Play in 1999, and was nominated for the 2002 Pulitzer Prize. McDonald's other works include When Grace Comes In, Faulkner's Bicycle, Dream of a Common Language and the libretto for the opera The End of the Affair. McDonald and the Cleveland Playhouse were recently awarded a collaboration grant from the NEA/TCG Theatre Residency Program for Playwrights.
