New Plays from the
SUNY New Paltz Dramatic Writing Program
- The inaugural issue of Vanguard Voices of the Hudson Valley includes the complete texts of the six new plays workshopped and presented in November 2003 in MMSC’s “Vanguard Voices Project,” supplemented by comments from Producing Director Robert G. Miller, Dramaturg Laurence Carr, and Actor William Connors.
- In affirming MMSC’s decision to begin publishing as an integral part of its programs, Miller noted, “As a company dedicated to celebrating the written word, we recognized it was necessary not only to revel in the work of gifted authors, past and present, but to contribute to the development of a body of literature yet to be written.”
- Commenting specifically about Vanguard Voices of the Hudson Valley: New
Plays from the SUNY New Paltz Dramatic Writing Program 2003, Miller
said, “Teaming up with the Dramatic Writing Program of the State University of
New York at New Paltz, headed by MMSC Dramaturg Laurence Carr, was an obvious choice. Six of his students’ best scripts were selected for this project and workshopped with the MMSC actors, directors and dramaturg, in an effort to help the student playwrights make the transition from the academic to the professional arena. The final versions were each given two public performances, followed by a “talk back” session which allowed the young playwrights to hear audience feedback. The end products of this process appear in this journal.”
